About me

Ruben Kretzschmar

My main profession is not related to visual arts or photography. I am an environmental scientist teaching and directing research at a major Swiss university. Photography is my hobby, meaning that I do not depend on making my income through photography. Since I do photography only in my free time, my capacity for contract work is limited (this may change after my retirement...). Nevertheless, I can offer services such as private coaching or smaller contract works as they fit my schedule. Of course, it is also possible to purchase my images (see Services).

I started photography with a DSLR camera in 2008, after many years of shooting film and digital compact cameras. Since then, my interest in the art of photography has developed into a real passion. Over the years, I have developed my skills and knowledge by studying books on photographic techniques, image composition, post-processing and other aspects of photography. I also followed some tutorials and took a course focusing on studio portrait photography. The most important way of learning, however, is to practice as much as possible, both in the field shooting and post-processing, while trying out various techniques.

In landscape photography, my main passion, it is most important to be at the selected location at the best time of the day and in suitable weather conditions. Therefore, good planning is essential, but one also needs a bit of luck to get ideal conditions. When it is time for shooting, I always try to capture the best possible exposure in terms of composition, focal length, focus, aperture and shutter speed. I often make use of filters such as polarizing or neutral density filters. All this requires some theoretical knowledge and experience. The best shots are then processed in the “digital darkroom”, for which I mainly use the programs Lightroom and Photoshop (sometimes Capture One). The final step is to print the very best images on photographic or fine art papers, for which I use a Canon PRO-1000 printer (up to format A2). Occasionally, I also order larger prints or photo books from commercial printing companies.
